    Description:

    ABOUT our cottage

Since 2005, the Sunrise Sunset Cottage has been one of the top rated Chesapeake Bay Vacation Rental homes for a fantastic affordable vacation.

Located in scenic small town Wenona which is on Deal Island in the Chesapeake Bay Tangier Sound region on the “slower, lower eastern shore” of Maryland. Deal Island is connected to the mainland by a modern ¼ mile bridge.

Enjoy spectacular Chesapeake Bay sunset and Wenona Harbor sunrise views from our modern custom built waterman style cottage. Watch ships and fishing/crabbing boats from the 2nd floor living room picture window and 2nd floor deck. Sip coffee as you take in a Wenona Harbor sunrise from the 2nd floor screened-in porch/deck area.

This is not just a summer vacation rental property. We are a destination/bucket list type property. Guests rent from us year 'round. Length of stay varies; typically weekly, often partial week, sometimes a month or longer.

    ABOUT Wenona, Maryland:

We are in a scenic small private sub division that is a mere 200 yard walk to Wenona harbor which is equipped with modern docks and double boat ramp maintained by Somerset County.

Wenona is a tiny old charm seafood industry town located on the southern tip of Deal Island. Home to 35 boat captains . Main catch are crab and oysters. Also, charter fishing trips. This is Tangier Sound country. Not a tourist destination. This is where you truly get away from it all.

Also home to Arby's. A half general store and half bar-n-grill. A must visit.

    WHAT to do:

Hmmm. Well that is up to you. Activity feedback from prior guests varies.
Some guests read, others walk, maybe birdwatch or bike. Of course fishing, motor boating, kayak paddling, canoe paddling, crabbing and waterfowl hunting are main staples of activity as well as enjoying some quality time sunbathing and sea shell collecting on Deal Island beach.

    The owners top 3 activities.

    1. Short 5 minute kayak paddle to the back side of Little Deal Island where I harvest a couple dozen muscles that 5 to 6 hrs later will be the main ingredient of my wife's linguine dish in a red sauce. Yummy!

    2. Walking over to Arby's Bar-n-Grill on the harbor before sunrise. "Arb" always has coffee on and a rack full of pre cooked breakfast sandwiches ready for consumption...my favorite is a slab of scrapple on white bread. The sunrise from Arby's picture window is killer, the locals chat me up and I get in a good 3 to 4 rounds of $1 Keno as well. Heaven!

    3. I'm a birder. Osprey and Eagles are breathtaking. But nothing beats seeing a Belted Kingfisher go for a meal. They look so innocent almost Disney cartoonist like, when suddenly this vicious predator side appears as it savagely dives head first in to a "gut" to beak snag a fish. Geeez!

    ABOUT Deal Island, Maryland:

    The geography:
one of the last Bay type water and land mosaics on the East Coast left unblemished and untouched by the sprawl of modernism. Deal Island, Maryland is a 6 mile long, 3 mile wide neck of small town living surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries in Somerset County of Maryland's eastern shore. Easy to get to. Connected to the mainland by a 1/4 mile bridge.

    The people:
humble, hard working, friendly. When you visit here, you are welcome here. Come blend in!

    Why visit:
Our guests describe us as a "bucket list" destination. The kind of place on this earth that you've heard about and have to experience at least once.

This is where you decompress, rejuvenate, getaway!

The home suited myself and two daughters for a birthday weekend get-away. We were grateful to be able to bring my daughter's two dogs. The house had everything we needed, we used the kayaks just two minutes away. The home was clean. The surrounding area is really laid back and quiet. We ate at Arby's which is a must! Can't say enough about the help we got from Wanda when we needed it. The owners were also quick to correspond with us. If you are looking to see a different part of Maryland, and if you are looking for a quiet get-away, this is the place.

This was our second visit to this awesome home in the sleepy little fishing village on Deal Island! We had spectacular weather, ate lots of seafood and enjoyed the views from the deck every chance we got. The home is beautifully decorated and oh so cozy. Best part is being able to take our four legged 'daughter' Piper with us. She loved her evening walks around the harbor and trips to the Deal Island beach, which we often had to ourselves. Would highly recommend this great home for the perfect Eastern Shore getaway. We'll be back! :)

We were also very pleased with the house and the accommodations. They were more than comfortable and exceeded those of a hotel. You have a cozy little place there and if we ever make it out that way again, we will look into renting your property again. Thanks,John

As for Deal Island...what a hidden gem! The beach was great, very clean, and plenty of soft sand. The kids loved looking for sea glass on the beach. We also enjoyed canoeing and crabbing from the pier. Even caught enough to steam for dinner! We had great crab cakes and even better company at Arby's and had a really good meal at Peaky's. Wanda was so great and answered all of my silly questions. We will definitely be planning a trip back. Thanks Patty and Bill!

The house is certainly named appropriately - we enjoyed the beautiful sunrises from the back window and the gorgeous sunsets from the front! And the water view is beautiful. In between our trips to softball games to watch my granddaughter play in the World Series in Salisbury, MD, we enjoyed crabbing and fishing, and made a few trips to the small beach nearby which we all loved. My husband enjoyed talking to the owners of Arby's and found that they are familiar with the area where we live. A great week and a very memorable vacation!!

This is one of the best place I have ever visited. Right next to the bay and so quiet. I am from New York and the traffic and pollution here is just terrible. Visiting Deal Island is one of the best thing to do ever. If you are from any metropolitan city then this place is for you. I visited this place with my family and a family friend and one of my cousin who was there for 2 days. None of them had anything negative to say about the place. This place is just awesome and I would highly recommend any of you who are looking to relax their mind and need some peace. Also, the neighbors right opposite this house are very generous and kind. They are very friendly and happy go nature kind of people. It's hard to find neighbors like them. All in all, I would say it was an amazing stay here and we had fun. Even if you don't want to go out anywhere, you can just stay home and cook and walk around the area. There is also a harbor right around the corner. I would love to visit this place again for my next vacation. :) Nik & Eena

I even thought it might be an indigo bunting, but it was a bluebird. (We loved having the bird book on hand, by the way. We're not true birders, but we love to spot and ID them!)I do want to tell you how friendly we found people. This was especially gratifying on the bikes -- people were more courteous to us in the Princess Anne region than anywhere else we have ridden. (We have brought bikes to a number of places around the country!) And of course they were very friendly in face-to-face encounters as well.Thank you again for sharing your wonderful retreat with us.
